Didn’t get a place in the London Marathon ballot this year so I decided to volunteer, handing out water at Mile 16. Here’s what I learned: The faster someone is the less likely they are to say thank you. The friendliest people are neither the fastest or the slowest but the people in the middle. The mass determination and spirit of marathon runners is mind blowing. The faster you...

Ready, Steady, Act: Running In The Movies #014
The Enforcer The traditional copy chases punk across inner city rooftops scene is given a cunning twist in this fantastic epic starring the might Clint Eastwood with the addition of criminal falling through a skylight on to a porno set. A classic.

The Rise of the Run-ch Break →
From The Daily Mail: “Researchers found around one in 13 employees now swap their suits for jogging gear and pound the streets while their colleagues relax and eat.   And, over the course of the year, fitness-craving staff clock up an average of 468 miles while away from their desks.” Subtext: Loads of British workers are taking the piss out of their employers by going for...

A Short History of Running In Pop Videos #014
Blackbud: You Can Run Theme: First film of a man aggressively running towards a finish line is reversed (clever), then we see the same man in a suit similarly running in reverse. It’s clear he’s not very happy. But why? Well, he’s in a graveyard. Finally there’s a boy running backwards from what is revealed to be the scene of domestic violence. In between all this...

What it looks like when the whole of London goes...
The data — indicating speed, distance and location — came from 10,000 individuals exercising between November 2010 and April this year. Thick, bright lines denote the more popular routes; duller tones show quieter paths. Favourite spots include the major parks, and eastenders keep fit along the canal ways and in Victoria Park. Who doesn’t like to run along the Thames? Parsons...

Learn from the pros: Sprinting
OK. First of all, excuse the gut. Secondly, if you think sprinting is just running fast then you are an idiot. Thirdly don’t click the button that says “Win a Free iPad”, you won’t win a free ipad. Things I learned from this video 1. A lot of people just want to get out there and run their fucking brains out. 2. Never pass your pocket. 3. There’s three phazes...

WU LYF: We Bros Theme: A group of youths (WU LYF stands for World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation by the way) are chasing across the wastelands from we know not what - a world where only pale clothes are permitted? This monster? Someone asking them to explain WU LYF’s lyrics? Manchester? A metaphor for the oppression of youth? Who knows. Anyway, it’s exhausting. When they reach a...

Running on Twitter
I love Twitter. I love running. Here’s what people are saying about running on Twitter today. Running to the “electric punanny mixtape vol 2” sounds fun but combining with wine and shit is highly dangerous - especially as you’re already bumpin (and presumably tweetin as well). That’s four things. Too many things. I hope you declined the advice to DO IT.   Yes...

I love the British Pathe website, lots of great vintage newsreels and among them this classic footage of the 1929 Liverpool Marathon including rather brilliantly this scene where a runner pauses and drinks from a bucket - yes a bucket. Man, I’d love to see them pull this kind of stunt at the Olympics. Click here to watch the film.
